myPantone – A Must Have App For Graphic Designers

The Pantone Libraries have been a standard in graphic design and printing for as long as I can remember. Although I don’t spec out colors day to day as I used to earlier in my career, there are times that I get stuck trying to figure out what colors to use for a design I’m doing. I’m VERY color challenged when it comes to doing design work. Even when I have the main color I want, I’m not good at picking out the complimentary colors. My friend Sydney showed me the myPantone App and I had to download it that night. It does the obvious. You can browse through the swatches and lookup colors by numbers. That’s no different than having a Pantone swatch book in front of you. What made me download the App as soon as I could was the integrated camera feature. Using the camera on your iOS device you can snap a photo and then use your finger to sample the colors in the photo and the app will find the closest Pantone color to the color sample that you chose. That’s really cool, but to make it even better the App gives you not only the matching Pantone color, but you can also get the Lab, sRGB, HTML (Hex), and CMYK values. This is awesome for web design too. For example, you could walk into a business and snap a couple of photos of their existing decor. Then you’ll have the swatches needed for designing their marketing materials as well as their website. Palettes can be shared via emailed or printed as well as sent to another device in range. Colors can also be saved as Favorites. There’s even a new SkinTones Library.
One thing you have to realize is that your iPhone is NOT color calibrated and lighting conditions for the photo will also make a difference especially if the white balance is off. Since your camera is NOT perfect, this will always be just an estimate and not an exact science. It ill help get you in the ballpark faster than manually searching. However, even with those caveats I would say that this is a must have App for designers. What I would like to see is Universal version that is native to iPad.

Share your color palettes via email

Actions: One Tap Automation

  Actions: One Tap Automation

Every once in a while I’m fortunate enough to come across an app that has the potential to significantly improve the way I work. Such was the case when I stumbled upon Actions. I say “stumble” because in all honesty, I can’t recall how or where I discovered the app, but I’m thankful that I did.
Since then I’ve been scheming different ways in which I can harness the power and versatility that this seemingly simple app has to offer and although I’ve been privy to the beta for the last couple of weeks, it still feels as though I’ve barely scratched the surface.

Like this article? Stay up to date with the latest changes by subscribing to our RSS feed or following us either on Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or App.net.
Actions in a Nutshell
Actions is a two part app, comprised of a server that runs silently in the background of your Mac (it also works on Windows) and an iPad app that allows you to execute specific actions on your Mac.
Prior to version 1.0.3 all that was possible was triggering keyboard shortcuts, however this latest incarnation has seen some amazing additions. Besides hotkeys, you can now control the system, application windows and media as well as send emails, open URLs and paste text snippets.
The first set showcases some of the actions possible.
Actions is stunning and every interaction with the app, from the intuitive and well thought out gestures to the whimsical sounds, shows an extraordinary level of attention to detail. And speaking of sounds, the developers have already revealed that they’re working with Hugo Verweij from Cleartones for even better sounds in the next update.
While the app is intuitive, no expense was spared in getting the user up to speed as quickly as possible. An email with a few instructions and download link to the server component, an initial set with some interesting actions and a tutorial guiding the user every step of the way are all part of the welcome package.
A detailed tutorial guides you through every step of the process.
The Anatomy of Actions
In order to get the most out of Actions it’s essential you familiarise yourself with the various building blocks.

Action – in essence is what will be executed on your target Mac. A few possible actions include:

Launching hotkeys – whilst you can create them from scratch, Actions already has a large list of keyboard shortcuts for specific apps (presets) that can be imported;
Controlling the system – perform a variety of common actions such as shutdown, restart, sleep, logout, etc.;
Controlling windows – akin to apps such as Moom on the Mac, Actions has the ability to resize a window so that it occupies either the left, right, top or bottom half of the screen. It can also close, minimize and maximize the current app window;
Controlling media – volume level, play, pause, previous and next track are just a few of the possible actions when it comes to media control;
Emails and URLs – here you can quickly create an email or open a URL. You can define email templates with To, Cc, Subject or Body pre-populated. Just one tap will launch the default email client on the Mac with all those details ready to go;
Text snippets – you may already have a text expander app, but if your needs are humble and not already met, then this is perfect for the job. Create a snippet of text and place (:) where you want to cursor to be;

Touchpads – this an action’s container: the button you tap in order to trigger said action. You can customize the touchpad by choosing one of seven available colors and optionally any of the many carefully crafted icons.
Sets – these contain touchpads and subsets. A set can be linked to an app (Magnet Application), meaning that when you switch between linked apps, their corresponding set also switches and vice-versa. It’s also possible to favourite a set for quick access;
Subsets – this is merely a group touchpads. A subset can either be locked (remains open when a touchpad is tapped) or unlocked (closes after tapping a touchpad).

It’s easy to create a new action and link it to an app.
Rich in Gestures
Actions makes clever use of gestures. The ability to define custom gestures is planned for a future update, but currently available gestures include:

Three finger swipe left or right navigates between sets;
Three finger swipe down reveals a scrollable list of sets for easy selection;
For sets that have more than one page of touchpads, one finger swipe left or right navigates between pages;
Two finger swipe left or right executes undo/redo in the current app and two finger swipe up/down copies/pastes in the active app.

An overview of the gestures as presented by the initial tutorial.
Although not a gesture per se, it’s relevant to point out that tapping and holding with three fingers will switch between your favourite set and the last set used. This is a great way of having quick access to a set with all those global controls (window controls etc.).
A Few Use Cases
There are many possible uses for Actions, ranging from the simple and mundane to the more elaborate – it’s all a matter of imagination and ingenuity. To get you started, here are just a few things that can easily be accomplished with Actions. Given the app’s nature, where appropriate, I’ve gone into more detail over on Mac.AppStorm, so just follow the links if you’re uncertain how to accomplish any action.
App Launcher/Switcher
Create a new set and leave the Magnet Application blank. Now create a touchpad for every app you’d like to have. Give it a name and optionally an icon and colour. Leave the shortcut blank and under Send to, choose the desired app.
Mark this set as favourite so you can have quick and easy access to your apps. You can also set the global actions in this set, such as resizing windows etc.
Working With Windows
I’ve already mentioned that Actions can handle windows, resizing and moving them so that they occupy only half of the screen. This in itself is great, but there are apps on the Mac far better suited for this task.
One such app is Moom, that allows you to create Window Snapshots, a logical grouping of windows that can easily be recalled with a keyboard shortcut. Another great feature of Moom is the ability to assign to a hotkey, to a sequence of window actions.
Working With Mail
One of the available presets in Actions is for Mail.app. It has the most common tasks you’d expect to do in mail, composing, replying, archiving etc. However, I still found it had something missing. The ability to move messages and navigate mailboxes. With a little help from apps such as Keyboard Maestro I can now fully triage and manage my mail from Actions.
Working With File and Folders
Actions feels right at home whizzing through finder with presets for the default locations and some common tasks. What happens though when you need something other than the default? Once again, with a little automation at the Mac end, it’s a cinch to setup Actions so that moving files and accessing favourite folders is a mere tap away.
Control Your Media Center
If you’re one of the many people that, like Katie Floyd, have cut the cable and set up a Mac mini as a media center, then Actions is the best possible remote you could get.
Simply create a new set with actions that allows you to control iTunes, volume, play and pause. Create some actions for Hulu or any other service you use. As long as you have you iPad near, you’ll never have to look for that pesky remote lost under the couch pillows.
Easy controls for media.
Still to Come
The dedicated team behind Actions is already hard at work on the next version which promises even more goodness. A few things on the roadmap so far include:

The ability to emulate a click (left, middle or right) with your key combination or by itself;
The ability to emulate key hold (press and release), instead of simply sending the combination once on tap;
The ability to repeatedly send keystrokes at a given rate;
Macros, the much awaited feature, allowing you to sequentially tie a series of actions (think Keyboard Maestro for the iPad).

Also planned is an online community for users to share with each other custom sets (importing and exporting is done via iTunes).
Final Thoughts
All that is needed for Actions and your Mac to communicate is that both are on the same wireless network. Proximity no longer is an issue and this opens up a realm of possibilities. You could harness the power of home automation with WeMo and other similar solutions. Or, you could automate your Mac with apps such as Better Touch Tool or Keyboard Maestro – let your imagination run wild!
Whether you’re a mad scientist like Brett Terpstra, with more key bindings that most could fathom, or a user with more humble needs (such as myself), you’ll undoubtedly find a use for Actions.
If you already find that your iPad is never far from your Mac, then why not give it a better use and boost your productivity. Why not try Actions? At $3.99 it’s a steal! It is, in my opinion, the companion app for any productive Mac lover!
How would you use Actions? Share your ideas with us in the comments.

Earlier rumours suggested that the fifth-generation iPad could launch as early as April, but a new report from DigiTimes is claiming that production of the next full-sized iPad will actually begin in July-August, citing the usual Taiwan-based supply chain makers as sources.
Consistent with other rumours though, the report also says the new iPad will be lighter and thinner than the fourth-generation model with a thin bezel design similar to the iPad mini. The display for the new iPad will reportedly be produced by LG Display and Sharp and the touch panels will come from TPK.
Previous rumors have suggested that Apple would hold an event this month, announcing the fifth-generation iPad and speculation picked up when a number of U.S. retailers like Best Buy, Walmart and MacMall cut prices of the iPad.
It’s definitely getting trickier to predict when Apple is planning to release a new product. Last year Apple launched two iPads with minor updates: the third-generation model with Retina display in March and the fourth-generation model with a faster A6X CPU, Lightning connector and FaceTime HD camera a few months later in October. Then Apple quietly launched a new higher-capacity 128 GB model in early February.
Only time will tell if production for the fifth-generation iPad will really begin in July-August. Stay tuned.
Image Credit: MacRumors
The post Fifth-Generation iPad Production To Begin In July-August? appeared first on Macgasm.

Rumors of the, yet to be announced, fifth-generation iPad are reaching a fevered pitch as more and more suppliers are claiming that production of a new model Apple tablet is about to get underway. A few weeks ago, we heard that Apple would be holding a special event on June 29 and just last week, Best Buy and Walmart drastically reduced the price of their iPad devices, making us think they may be making room on store shelves for a new model.
Today, DigiTimes is reporting that suppliers are gearing up for mass production of the fifth-generation iPad starting in July, which is right on track for a fall launch.

According to DigiTimes, production of a new 9.7-inch screen will take place between July and August of this year. Suppliers will focus on key components, such as display panels and touch screens, in order to prepare for smooth production yields.
An unnamed source told DigiTimes that “The new iPad will be thinner and lighter than the fourth-generation one and will adopt a slim bezel design, similar to that of the iPad mini.”
DigiTimes also reports that the new iPad’s display panels will be supplied wby LG Display and Sharp. Touch screens will be assembled by TPK. Nitto Denko and Teijin will supply the rumored G/F2 (DITO) thin film.

» Related posts:
Rumor: Possible June Launch for 5th Gen iPad
iPad Mini ‘Challenging’ to Build, Expect Low Supply at Launch
Next Gen iPad Rumored to Get Thinner iPad mini Screen Display

Keep Tabs on New Movie Releases With eTrizzle

  Keep Tabs on New Movie Releases With eTrizzle

As you know, I’m a pretty big fan of movies! Earlier this year I reviewed Movie Mate Pro, an app for tracking theatrical releases. There is another side to the coin though; what about movies out of theaters that are released for purchase or streaming? With the amount of different online options out there, it can get tough to keep track of them all. That’s where eTrizzle comes in.

Like the article? You should subscribe and follow us on twitter.
eTrizzle helps you decide what to watch while at home. It’s a simple app/website that will aggregate movie listings from several online streaming/purchasing services, including: iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Netflix, Redbox, Amazon Prime, HBO Go, Redbox Instant, and more. Even better, it’s well-organized and easy to search.
The Home Screen: New Releases
When you first open up the app, you’re taken to a list of the newest releases from across all of the supported services. As you can see from the above screenshot, each listing includes the title, movie poster, and Rotten Tomatos rating. Pressing one of the movies will take you to full listing screen with ratings, synopsis, actors, rating, runtime, the ability to view the trailer, and the list of services on which the movie is available.
Single Movie Screens
As you can see, streaming services will not list a price, whereas downloadable versions of the movie will. Pressing on one of the services will take you to a webpage for that movie; while this is OK for services like Amazon and Redbox (and even Google Play, I suppose), this proves problematic for Netflix and Hulu, where you cannot stream from a mobile browser. eTrizzle should really check for the native app and then if it’s not installed, kick the user to the Google Play store or website.
I also feel that services like Google Play, Netflix, and Hulu should be checking certain devices or OS for a native app, but responsibility here belongs to eTrizzle.
This is really the main/only functionality of eTrizzle (hence the short review). However, the app does have some fantastic organization options I want to talk about.
Stay Organized!
eTrizzle lets you not only do a text search using the bar at the top of each screen, but also allows you to browse movies by a lot of different criteria. There are dropdowns available that let you filter by things like Genre, Service, and even New/Popular.
Dropdown options for Genre and Service
At the bottom of the screen there are also 4 buttons: New, Popular, Services, and Browse. While the first three are self-explainatory, Browse has some pretty nifty lists you can check out, including: Free, Streaming, and Top Movies of 2012. This is followed by a list of all the genres.
The Browse Screen
I thought this was a really nice touch as it gives the user different exploring or discovery options.
Wishlist
While I really do like the service, I think it’s fairly obvious that they are just generating content exactly as it appears on their website. I’d really like to see better native integration by calling on-device apps for faster streaming/purchase. This would make the app incredibly powerful. I’d also really like to see a “Favorites” option that would allow me to keep a list of the movies I want to see, so I could quickly rent or stream when I’m ready to watch them.
Conclusion
eTrizzle is a really nice aggregator that helps you keep track of newly released movies, available for purchase of streaming. While I will continute to use it for that reason alone, I really would like to see some tighter integration with Android to make it feel like a native app. Right now, it feels more like a mobile-optimized website. I’ll hold off on giving it a rating now and look forward to what the developers will do in future builds!

Google has removed nearly 60,000 applications from the Google Play Store, according to various reports. It is unclear as to what the cause was for the mass removal; however, we’re happy to see Google cleaning things up.
While Google doesn’t stand in the way of any developers listing an app in the Play Store but has been known to remove titles on occasion. It’s possible that Google is just stepping things up a bit as of late, pulling things down if they appear to violate some of the policies.
Really, there’s not much difference to the average user when Google pulls down these so-called “spammy” apps and games. How many do you really need?
As to what the official number of Android apps actually is will likely be fleshed out at Google IO next month.

Samsung Galaxy Note is one of the rather interesting devices released by Samsung as it’s a cross between a traditional tablet and a smartphone with a gigantic screen size of 5.3-inch (by smartphone standards). It makes the device much more useful for some people in terms of increased productivity possibilities but at the same time it renders the device un-pocket able. Other impressive features include a powerful 8MP front rear facing camera as well as a 2MP front facing camera. Good news for the US consumers that fancy of this device is that its just going to be released to AT&T. Even better that talented Android developers have already managed to root the device even before the release! Here is a guide on how to root your At&T version of Samsung Galaxy Note SGH-i717. We posted earlier a guide for rooting the international version of this device here.
Note: Rooting, Jailbreaking or customizing your device can be risky, and you may end-up bricking your device! Follow the instructions posted here at your own responsibility as Inspired Geek will not be responsible for any damage to your device.

Required Downloads
- Download the ODIN 1.85 and then extract the .zip file.
- Download Pre-rooted kernel for PDA.
- If you do not have Samsung’s KIES 2.0 installed, download and install it. Correct USB drivers must be installed, so that programs can communicate with the device. Reboot computer after KIES installation.
Procedure: Root Samsung Galaxy Note
Step 1: Make sure that your device is in USB debugging mode: Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging. Step 2: Reboot your device into download mode. To do so: Turn the device off, then power it on by holding Volume-Down then powering it on simultaneously. Then there will be a screen asking to press Vol-Up to put the device in to Download mode. Step 3: Start ODIN.
Step 4: Connect the device to your computer using USB. Step 5: Wait a few seconds, the ODIN screen will show that a device is now connected - Make sure that in ODIN nothing is checked, except the "Auto reboot" and "F. Reset Time"checkboxes. - Press the "PDA" button, and select the pre-rooted PDA kernel file that you downloaded above. - Press "Start". ODIN will now flash the pre-rooted kernel, and the device should reboot afterwards.

Step 6: After the device reboots in the OS then from Android Market search for the SuperUser and install it.
If you follow all the above steps correctly then your AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy Note will be rooted. Please note that the above mentioned procedure will increment the custom flash counter on your device. Which is not a big issue for most users but its believed this it is used by Samsung for the warranty purposes.
For more details on this this rooting procedure, discussions and future updates please follow the XDA thread linked below.
[Source]

LifeTopix: Notes, Calendars, Tasks and Lists - Life Organized in One AppLightArrow Inc.Productivity$ 2.99DownloadLifeTopix is an iPad app developed by LightArrow Inc. This universal app serves as a complete organizer and planning tool for every aspect of your life.Long-time readers are sure to recall the LifeTopix name. We have reviewed the app on the iPhone twice before, most recently when the app was back on Version 5.1.1.In the review, we wrote, “It really is a robust tool that tracks and organizes EVERY aspect of my life. And the customer service truly can’t be beat…There’s nothing to disparage here. The security is great, as are your backup options and search functionality.” The app was scored as a 10/10.That was back in December. Now, LifeTopix is up to Version 6.0.1, and has a bunch of small tweaks that make a great app even better. In addition, some workarounds have been discovered for minor annoyances. For example, unchecking Show Closed Items in filter fixes the slow performance bug some people experienced when numerous completed device reminders were sitting on their device.We’ve talked a lot about the LifeTopix on the iPhone in the past. This time around, let’s talk turkey about the iPad user’s end experience. In a word: brilliant.One of my issues with the app in the past has been how cramped it feels on the iPhone. On the iPad, LifeTopix really comes into its own. It still works great on your iPhone, but LifeTopix has room to breathe on the iPad’s luxuriously large screen.The new features really make the iPad version of the app sing. I love the extensive user customization options, the Configurable Dashboard, and the collaboration features!I wish that I could rate this app an 11 out of 10. It’s just that good! Described as “simple enough for your daily agenda & chores, and powerful enough for your home & work projects,” LifeTopix is ideal for GTD® enthusiasts or anyone who wants to get their lives in order.Want to learn more? Check out this video on YouTube!LifeTopix is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad. Requires iOS 5.0 or later. This app is optimized for iPhone 5.The post LifeTopix iPad App Review: A Central Organization Hub for Your Life appeared first on Tapscape.

  'Mittens' Review - What's New, Pussycat?

I don't know about you, but I think Disney's foray into mobile games might have yielded some of the most creative work of its recent years. Ignoring of course the companies they own, the Mouse House has been seen as lagging in both the movie and videogame departments for quite some time. As anyone not living in a sewer themselves knows, that all changed with the release of Where's My Water? [$0.99] For the first time in...well...ever, a new Disney icon had been created at the videogame level first, and the company seemed to be using mobile to kick off an upswing in the quality department. So naturally, with an alligator as their new face of gaming, they'd follow things up with...a fluffy kitten. Wait, what?
If Mittens [$0.99] - from its seemingly detached concept to its unexpected existence - has you skeptical, you're not alone. Heck, in our TA Plays for the game, Brad drew some early conclusions about the way that the experience seemed like it was playing things disappointingly safe both from a mechanical and creative standpoint. Having now cleared through all of the game's levels and its available bonus pack, it seems that like its in-game collectibles, this one might just be a gem after all. As with the title's titular feline, though, players may go through ups and downs along the way.

The thing is, where Swampy brought with him not only a novel concept but a slew of memorable levels - each of which felt like it had a distinct theme and purpose - Mittens meanders much more on its way to eventual greatness. As with any physics puzzler, the basics are covered in the first few levels of each zone, with the core concept revolving around the need to swipe and tap our brave kitty to safety on a quest to impress his true love. Unfortunately, this introductory mindset seems to bleed into a large portion of the game's first fifty levels, with many of them feeling like indistinct, unmemorable versions of one another.
You know that sense you get when a new level in a three-star puzzler feels vaguely like a rearranged version of the one you played just far enough back that the game thinks you forgot it? Yeah, it's that. All the trademark elements are in place, including sliced ropes, last minute drops onto bouncy objects, and risky collectible snagging - painted with a Disney polish that ensures everything feels smooth and precise. Yet for all its emphatic not-badness, there's a lingering feeling of ho-hum in the first two zones that's hard to shake. A sense that Disney might be trading in slightly on its newly minted supremacy in the genre, doing far less than they could to justify a purchase.
The yin to this more reserved yang, however, comes in the form of the levels that appear towards the end of each zone, as well as almost the entirety of the game's third area. Reassuringly, Mittens does eventually step out of the genre's comfort zone to deliver a much fresher take on a well-trod play style. First appearing as five bonus levels that are unlocked as you collect gems, these more complicated stages feel like a wonderful mix between Amazing Alex [$0.99] and Cut the Rope [$0.99]. Each one departs from the "tap here, swipe this" feeling, instead forcing you to navigate landscapes already full of motion, and piece together the perfect timing needed to play your role as the little furry cog in a miniature machine. Better still? They tie together wonderfully and make up for the feeling of detachment prevalent throughout earlier levels. My particular favorites are the five final circus big-tops of the second zone, that culminate in a brilliant level full of tightropes, cannons, and miniature cars.
And while the last zone and the game's much tougher (and more imaginative) harbor zone continue this trend, I can't help but wonder why it feels like it takes almost half the game to get there. Drawing further attention to the game's design foibles is a seeming lack of effort in - of all areas - production values. Mittens' is completely without stage music save for a repetitive chime at the end of a level, and the cut scenes that exist to punctuate play pale in comparison to the subtle, endearing storytelling achieved in Where's My Water? Except for grating meows when you fall into blackness or foul up, the titular kitty lacks all semblance of a personality, and it proves nigh-impossible to invest in the game beyond the compulsive desire to beat its levels.
This, perhaps, is the predicament I'm having with Mittens. You'd be hard pressed to call it bad by any stretch, and about half way through, it manages to take off in ways not hinted at in our TA Plays video to become a pretty wonderful take on the physics puzzler. At a dollar, and with a future that will doubtless be filled with more content, fans of the genre would be hard pressed not to pick this one up. At the same time, however, it's more than a little disheartening that Disney seems to have followed up their return to form with a return to safety, and I don't think it's unreasonable to expect more than a competent time-killer from a studio of their pedigree.

Like a top notch student handing in a rush job, Mittens sags not under the weight of what it does wrong, but all that it could have done much better.
App Store Link: Mittens, $0.99
TouchArcade Rating:

Twitter is all about short messages of 140 characters or less. Sure you can now easily tweet a picture along with your text, but then you’ll have less than 140 characters because the link to your pic is going to take up some of the text. GraphicTweets aims to combine your tweet with the picture you want to send. This isn’t the first app we’ve seen that allows you to add text to a picture and share it, but most of the other Apps are aimed at Facebook and Instagram. This is one of the few Apps aimed at Twitter first and of course it allows you to share via Facebook and Instagram too. Once you launch the App it starts you off with the ability to key in your text. You can choose font color and background color as well as size. Next you can add a photo. It can be one of your photos or one from Flickr or Facebook. Lastly, just hit the Share button and choose to share your GraphicTweet on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. I’m impressed by the large variety of font choices. It actually has more fonts than any other mobile App that I’ve seen. You can use multi-touch gestures to rotate the text or move it to where it looks best on the photo. It works as advertised, however, I’d like to see a couple of additions. First off I’d like to see this as a Universal App supporting iPad. Next, I’d like to see the ability to have word wrap in the text. Right now it seems to be limited to one line of text per GraphicTweet.
