Secure Your Mac With Gatekeeper | Mac Basics

Because it’s designed to accommodate multiple users, easy networking and always-on connections, OS X is very secure, more so then a Windows PC. As we’ll see, other users (and outsiders) have only the level of access that you grant them. However, this can be both a strength and vulnerability, in that you could be fooled into giving a rogue users or application access privileges. This is what happened with the Flashback Trojan in early 2012 (a trojan being a type of malware that masquerades as something innocent to trick you into installing it).
Mountain Lion includes a new, extra layer of security in Gatekeeper, which can authenticate applications and prevent software from unknown sources running. This provides a key way to stop such malware.
You can set Gatekeeper to one of three levels. The most secure permits only software that’s been downloaded from the Mac App Store to instal and run. All programs in the Mac App Store have been fully vetted, so you can be confident that they’ll be safe. The next level includes software from other well known and trusted sources in addition to the App Store. Finally, you can set Gatekeeper to allow software that’s come from anywhere. This is the least secure, but if you have specialist software then you may need to use this setting to enable it to download, install or run.

Alternatively, you can manually exempt a specific application from Gatekeeper without needing to lower your security generally. This is useful if you need to run a specialist piece of software that you trust. To do this right-click the program’s icon in Finder and select Open from the contextual menu that pop up. Click Open again. If necessary provide your username and password. This overrides the normal level of security provided by Gatekeeper and will enable the software to run and install.
If you try to run software that doesn’t match your Gatekeeper settings, you’ll get an alert and won’t be able to run it unless you change your Gatekeeper settings or opt to open it as an exception. This makes it very difficult for malicious software to run without your full knowledge.
How To Configure Gatekeeper

Security and Privacy > gatekeeper enables you to keep your Mac more secure by restricting what software can run on it. To configure Gatekeeper, go to Apple ? System Preferences and the select Security and Privacy from the list of options available. Click the General tab.
Unlock Changes > before you can make any changes to the security options on your Mac, you need to unlock them. Click the padlock in the bottom left of the window and enter an administrator username and password when prompted. This removes the lock.
Pick and Choose > You can now pick what types of apps are allowed to install and run. For the utmost safety, restrict them to Mac App Store. For greatest flexibility but least security, choose anywhere. Click the padlock to lock these changes in place until it’s unlocked again.

Read More:

12 Years of OS X | Mac Development
Share Files Wirelessly Between Mac Using AirDrop
File Sharing Between Mac and Windows
How To Setup Your New Mac in Minutes
What Is OS X Mountain Lion | All Updates

Fix iPhone Keyboard Shortcuts that Are Not Working After Jailbreaking iOS 6. x

If you have been having issues with your keyboard shortcuts not working properly after jailbreaking iOS 6. x then we have a couple of solutions that might just help you solve the problem.

It seems that a growing number of jailbroken users are having issues with previously setup keyboard shortcuts not functioning as they should, if at all. Being able to set up shortcuts on your iOS device is really handy especially for email addresses and such. When things go wrong however, they can be a chore to fix.

We still don't know why this issue has occurred and it could possibly be because of how the jailbreak works, or because of a jailbreak tweak having compatibility issues with this feature. The good news is that there area couple of workarounds available that can fix these issues. If you are having issues with the your iPhone keyword then why not try these fixes for yourself.

Fix 1:
Go to Settings > iCloud> Documents & Data. Toggle the switch to Off and allow your system to update. Next go to Settings > General > Keyboard and delete of all your installed keyboard shortcuts. Then go back to Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data and toggle the switch to On to re-enable Documents syncing through iCloud. You will need to reboot your device after this which may take a little bit of time but all of your shortcuts will be restored and should be functioning normally again.

Fix 2:
Go to Settings > General > Keyboard and select the keywords option. Select the currently enabled keyboard and change it to a different language. Without leaving the keyboard settings panel, re-select the native keyboard that you were originally using. Next go into a text editor and try some of your keyboard shortcuts and you should find that they are all working normally again.

As mentioned, we don't know why this is happening and there hasn't been any official word from the jailbreak Dev Teams. This does however seem to be a widespread issue with keyboard shortcuts on devices with the Evasi0n jailbreak iOS 6.1.2. Many people consider keyboard shortcuts to be very useful so these quick fixes should help to get everything back up and running. If you are having this issue and you have solved it using another method please do let us know so we can share it with everyone.

Getting started with FaceTime couldn’t be easier. When you launch the app, all you need to do is sign in with your Apple ID. You can then start making video calls to anyone who appears in the app’s Contacts list. Select a contact, tap on their name and tap again on the FaceTime icon. The other person’s device will ring, informing them that you’re calling. When they answer, away you go!
FaceTime gets all the contact information from the Contacts app on your iPad. If you already have a mail account set up on your iPad. If you already have a mail account set up on your iPad then the Contacts app will have imported the contact details from your email account as well as any people you add manually. If you want to add someone else to your list in FaceTime, simply tap the + button next to All Contacts.
Quick Contacts
To create a list of those people you stay in touch with frequently, tap on Favourites at the bottom of your contact list, then tap the + button. Tap on Recents to see your FaceTime call history and details of the FaceTime conversation you’ve had.
You can switch FaceTime on and off by tapping Setting ? FaceTime. If you don’t switch it off, you’ll always be available for FaceTime chat. In Setying you can also change the email address that people use to contact you over FaceTime, or add another email address that acts like a phone number you can give out (or several different ones for different groups of people).

There are a couple of important things to note. First, even if you have a 3G-capable iPad, FaceTime works only over Wi-Fi. Second, the person you want to contact over FaceTime must also have an iOS device or a computer that works with FaceTime – that is, an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Mac. If you want to chat with people who have Android or Windows, you’ll have to use alternatives such as the Skype app (free from the App Store).
Get To Know The FaceTime Screen On The iPad

Thumbnail live view > You’ll see mini preview of yourself showing what the other person can see. Tap and drag image to reposition it so that you don’t obscure anything important on the screen.
Suspend camera > If you press your iPads Home button while you’re chatting, you’ll be able to carry on using FaceTime but also access other apps. The camera will be switched off but it will still be possible to chat.
Microphone > The microphone level isn’t adjustable, although you can alter the speaker volume using your iPad’s volume controls. Tap the left-hand icon at the foot of the screen to mute the mic.
Designated contact > When trying to call a contact, you need to make sure that you have the email address in your Contact list that they’ve designated as their FaceTime email address. Tap the middle icon to end a call.
Camera switching > Tap on the camera icon to switch between the FaceTime camera (front-facing) or the iSight (back) while you chat. You can do this at any point in the FaceTime call, no just from the start.

Read More:

Top iPad apps for kids
How To Scan Documents With Your iPad
How To Create, Edit And Organise Notes in Evernote
eBay For iPad | How to Buy and Sell
How to Enable Emoji Emoticons on iPad

A slightly modified iPhone 5 featuring support for AWS bands will go on sale in Apple retail stores from the 12th of April. According to Engadget, facilitating Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) requires slightly modifying the hardware and those who already own the iPhone 5 won't be able to enjoy these benefits by means of a software update.

T-Mobile will begin carrying the iPhone 5 on the 12th of April too and we are sure that T-Mobile will be offering the AWS variant of the iPhone 5 from the go. The new A1428 iPhone 5 will look exactly the same as the current model and will be available as unlocked and SIM free. Apple will also be moving AT&T sales onto the newer model as well so anyone looking for this newer model will have no problems from the 12th of April.

There are plenty of mobile operators using AWS and while a large number of smartphone manufacturers offer devices featuring radios capable of communicating using the AWS spectrum, the iPhone 5 has to date not beenn one of them. This new, minor, enhancement is great if you are planning on purchasing an iPhone 5 in the next month or so. We can all wonder whether Apple planned this move well in advance as a tweaked device is going to become a talking point and with the Samsung Galaxy S4 on the way this could be exactly what Apple were planning. The new iPhone 5 may just take the focus of the Samsung Galaxy S4. That being said, the new Galaxy is at least half a generation ahead of its Apple rival and AWS or not, the iPhone may just struggle a bit to stop its rival from selling in vast quantities. The new tweaked iPhone 5 will run on AT&T with full support for LTE.

Tablets – Taking the Middle Road

Laptops have large and comfortable screens, but they are bulky and inconvenient to lug around. Smartphones are lightweight, but the screen is too small to read text or enjoy movies and other video. It is this space that tablets have invaded and given users the best of both worlds. It all started with the iPad, but there are more than a dozen vendor offering competing tablets. Here is a brief look at the best tablet options you have.

iPad
Tablets have been around for more than 15 years, but they were little more than shrunken computers. They assumed a new avatar with Apple’s iPad. It is currently the most popular tablet on the market. At the same time it is also one of the most expensive. It has a 10.1 inch screen and it light enough to carry in your bag, without feeling it weight.
If you want to find a cheaper iPad, you can buy the previous generation iPad 2. It is still quite fast. It has slightly slower graphics than the latest version, but that difference is hardly noticeable to all but the most discerning eyes. According to reviews, iPad is still the best tablet that you can lay your hands on.
Asus Transformer
If you want more inexpensive options, then you can turn to Asus’ Transformer series of tablets. The latest devices run Android 4.0, which is optimized for 10-inch screens. There are two devices in this series – Prime and Pad. As the name suggests, the Prime is the more expensive tablet of the two. It features a more powerful processor and faster graphics than Transformer Pad.
The Pad is slightly less powerful, but it is lightweight and it does the job very well. If your goal is to access the internet on the go and watch movies and listen to music anywhere, it will do the job for you. On the other hand, if you are more interested in high intensity games, the Prime is the better choice because it will have little to no stutter when you are playing.
Amazon Kindle Fire
If you want a smaller tablet than iPad and Transformer prime, you might want to try out the Kindle Fire. It has a 7 inch screen, which makes it fit into some people’s pockets. Reading books is very convenient on this device. Moreover, you get a free trial of Amazon Prime for a month with each new Kindle Fire. You can watch stream unlimited movies and music from Amazon. If you like the service, you can become a Prime Member of $79 a year.
A persistent complaint about tablets from users is that it is difficult to type for a long period. Tablets are not really meant to edit documents and create content in general. However, if you have a lot of typing to do and you still want to carry a tablet instead of a notebook, then you can use one of the many tablet bluetooth keyboards that are available in the market.
Susan Hannan is a content writer and Marketing Executive who is recently pass 000-001 and in future he wants to get certified with oa0-002.

Great news to report for all those anxiously waiting on an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and other new devices. We have just been informed that both Pod2g and Planetbeing are now working on the long awaited iOS 6 / 6.0.1 jailbreak.

There are so many people who have purchased the iPhone 5 or upgraded their existing handsets to iOS 6 and now after months of waiting for a jailbreak solution it seems that things are looking up. Planetbeing has been updating the public via his twitter feed over the past couple of months and today a new tweet from him suggests that he is making progress and working with Pod2g.

According to his tweets, Planetbeing spent last friday with Pod2g where they have finally ironed out a working untethered jailbreak for iOS 6. His tweet said, “Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap.” Pod2g responsed this morning which confirms that he is involved with the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6. He said, “@planetbeing oh yeah! 2 new vulnerabilities in a day, chance was with us. But we still miss that initial code execution for a public jb.”

Earlier this month, Planetbeing confirmed that he has a working iOS 6 jailbreak running on his iPhone 5. The tweets today suggest that all they are missing now is an initial code execution for a public jailbreak. Jailbreaking has become increasingly over the past couple of years and this is especially true on new devices. Pod2g's involvement in the iPhone 5 jailbreak is great news for the community and it could mean that a public iOS 6 untethered jailbreak is just around the corner.

It is important to note that iOS 6.1 is nearly upon us and it is likely that the Dev Teams will wait for Apple to release it before they release any untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 and newer devices. The wait is almost over and we will be keeping you up to date with all the information as we receive it.

If you or your kids love SpongeBob SquarePants, you will likely love this. For two minutes. Before you realise you have better things to do.
This app presents you with SpongeBob in an underwater scene, and you can do pretty much whatever you like to him; touch his mouth to make him speak a limited number of phrases, touch his eyes to make him wink, and touch the background to create bubbles that he stares at. If you tilt the iPhone, he slides with Gary the snail to one side, and you can move the device up sharply to make him jump. You can even stretch him and make him dance. It’s all very amusing, but despite its great use of the ‘Phone’s features, it certainly won’t keep you or your kids transfixed for more than a few minutes. If you really love the character, though, or have a very young child in mind, it’s a fun and quirky few minutes of whimsical, watery entertainment that probably delivers just about enough to justify the price, but it does little more than that and won’t make for any converts.
Rating 2 Star
