Symphony of the Origin Review
By Rob Rich on April 9th, 2013
Our Rating: :: GOOD GAME, BAD GRAMMARUniversal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

It’ll take more than a terrible script with horribly awkward dialog to derail this impressive JRPG.

Developer: Kotobuki Solution Co., Ltd
Price: $3.99
Version: 1.0.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 5
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

When I played Symphony of Eternity last year, I thought it had some good ideas but was too rough in places and wasn’t much of a looker. Symphony of the Origin, a sort of follow-up to the original but not really a sequel, addresses pretty much all the complaints I had. Of course in so doing a couple more issues have popped up.
Symphony of the Origin is another “save the world” style RPG. Although in this case the story is treated more like a mystery with overarching doom. A young soldier named Ryle finds himself in the middle of an invasion by the fiendish “Evils of the Earth-depths.” I’ll comment more on that later. Totally outmatched and on the run, he accidentally awakens an autonomous golem named Denoas who inadvertently saves his life. Shortly thereafter the duo are sent out on a quest to discover Denoas’ origins and help him reach his full potential so that he may turn the tide of the war. Naturally they pick up a few stragglers along the way.
Whereas the first game sported somewhat bland visuals, Symphony of the Origin looks great. The environments are more detailed and varied. The character sprites in combat are also more detailed in addition to being animated. My other issue with the Eternity was the somewhat clunky menu system, and that’s also a lot better and user-friendly here. Players can tap on ust about anything that would make sense (characters, portraits, buttons with arrows) to select targets which makes for a significantly smoother experience. There’s also a handy “auto” button to speed through easier fights if desired.
In addition to all of that, Origin also maintains that extra level of interesting mechanics that aren’t immediately apparent. This time around players can create custom weapons from three different parts (blade, hilt, bowstring, etc) to craft their own personal ultimate weapons like a sword that allows the user to defend injured comrades and attempt to steal from an enemy with each strike or a poisonous bow. Most components also include skills that a character can master (i.e. permanently add to their repertoire) after enough use.
The only real problem with Origin, aside from comparing shop gear with equipped gear being such a massive pain, is that the localization is terrible. The spelling is okay but the actual grammar and sentence structure is enough to make anyone facepalm. I mean come on, “Evils of the Earth-depths?” Shortened to “Evils?” That’s just atrocious. And it’s only the beginning, sadly.
Despite the story being undermined by a terrible script, Symphony of the Origin is still a fun little iOS RPG. It’s got a lot of depth to its mechanics, some great looking visuals, and relatively interesting characters. Just don’t spend too much time analyzing what any of them have to say.

RPG Symphony of the OriginUniversal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Buy Now: $3.99Released: 2012-12-18 :: Category: GamesApps mentioned in this post: RPG Symphony of the Origin

[ Symphony of the Origin Review is a post from 148Apps ]

This Week’s App Store Editor’s Choice: Badland

At the start of each new week, we like to let our readers know what Apple considers the best new app of the moment. Actually, it’s not always a new app. Last week, Flipboard was honored with the title. We spotlighted Apple’s other Editor’s Choice, Magicka.
This Week, one of Apple’s Editor’s Choice awards goes to a new atmospheric platformer called Badland. This side-scrolling casual adventure is both beautifully rendered and fun to play.

Players must guide a fuzzy little sprite, called a clone, through a treacherous forest filled with brittle, spiky tree branches, exploding mines, and buzz saws that will cut your clone to pieces if you don’t watch out.

To move the clone, tap the screen. Repetitive taps, spaced out properly, will allow the sprite to fly along as the background moves. If the clone gets stuck and can’t move forward as the background does, he will eventually die because he can’t keep up with the game. So, be sure to avoid any areas where rocks or trees block the path.
As you travel, you’ll collect additional clones that will move in unison with each other. The goal is to rescue as many clones as possible, but that is very difficult to do since many of them will explode with mines or get shredded by a buzz saw. As long as you end the game with at least one clone, you can move on to the next level.

Clones grow bigger and smaller by eating different glowing bulbs. Sometimes, the only way to get through a narrow pathway is to eat a shrinking bulb in order to get small enough to fit. Other times, you’ll want to avoid the size-changing orbs or you might end up too big to fit between the moving gears.
You can play alone, or with up to three additional friends in real-time. In Multiplayer mode, each person is in charge of a corner of the screen and the goal is to collect the most clones. The player that survives the longest with at least one clone wins the game.

As you travel through the forest, dawn becomes afternoon and the noon becomes evening and then night. Each day that you travel includes four sections with 10 levels in each. Currently, there is only one day available for play. However, another day is on its way.
This is a lot like Nihilumbra. The look is beautiful and interesting, but the game plays like a traditional platformer. The graphics are crisp and the sound track is calming. It reminds me of listening to meditation tracks.
It is no surprise that Apple has named Badland this week’s Editor’s Choice for its stunning visuals and ever-increasing difficult terrain. Pick it up in the App Store for $3.99.

» Related posts:
This Week’s App Store Editor’s Choice: Fetch
This Week’s App Store Editor’s Choice: Year Walk
This Week’s App Store Editor’s Choice: Might & Magic Clash of Heroes

Nihilumbra Brings Together Platform Gaming And Poetic Literary Style – iPad App Review

Nihilumbra was one of the App Store’s best games of 2012. It is visually stunning, emotionally compelling, and offers unique gameplay set to a traditional platform background.
Players control “Born” who was created out of nothingness and is constantly on the run from The Void. Travel deep into caves, across blizzard-like snowstorms, and into lush, green forests to help Born discover his true identity and nature.

The game starts with Born as a little black blob. Using touch or tilt controls move along a side-scrolling landscape that is dominated by high contrast black-and-white imagery. You won’t have any weapons, but you’ll have your wits and a handful of magical abilities that can turn the ground into a variety of different forms.

Born can only move forward and backward and jump. Over time, he learns five different spells that allow him to lay down a special type of ground. For example, Born can lay ice on the ground using the blue orb. This will make the ground slippery so that he can get a running start for longer jumps, and so that enemies can’t stop themselves from falling into a pit.

As the game progresses, Born travels to new worlds and discovers more about himself. He starts as a nothingness that was created out of The Void, but learns how to fit in with his surroundings and eventually fills his emptiness with the world around him.
The game is visually stunning. The graphics are artistic and creative. It mixes traditional side-scrolling platform game play with a melancholy story. While the game itself is fairly easy, it is the visuals and innovative story telling that makes the game worth playing.

Once you’ve played through the entire game, you’ll unlock Void mode, which is significantly harder to complete. So, if you find the game play to be too simple, don’t worry. You’ll be in for a rough time in Void mode.

What I Like: Even though this game is basically a jump-and-run platformer game, it is creative and interesting and offers a unique twist on tradition.
What I Didn’t Like: Nothing.
To Buy or Not to Buy: This is a must-have app for fans of platformer games. It is beautifully rendered and has an innovative design. The price is reasonable for something so interesting and entertaining.

Name: Nihilumbra
Version Reviewed: 1.3
Category: Games
Developer: Beautifun Games
Price: $2.99
Score:

» Related posts:
Blueprint 3D HD Brings Photo Explode To Puzzle Gaming — iPad App Review
Zynga Convinced Tablets Have Become the Ultimate Gaming Platform
Play Beat Brite To Practice Your ‘80s Music, Simon Says Style – iPad App Review

Crock-Pot Recipes Review
By Jennifer Allen on January 21st, 2013
Our Rating: :: TASTY AND EASYUniversal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

A plethora of tasty meals that can be made with a slow cooker, even if the app’s looks aren’t the greatest.

Developer: Publications International
Price: $3.99
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Device Reviewed On: iPhone 5
iPhone Integration Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.75 out of 5 stars
Re-use Value Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 3.83 out of 5 stars

The Slow Cooker is fast becoming a highly sought after kitchen gadget. With everyone leading increasingly busy lives, and in need of using their time productively, it’s so convenient being able to put some ingredients in a pot at the start of the day, knowing there will be a tasty meal ready by that evening. Crock-Pot Recipes might be a little, understandably, heavy on the advertizing but with plenty of different recipes to discover, it’s a useful resource.
That advertizing, by the way, will probably mostly grate because of the $3.99 price tag. There aren’t any banners or anything like that, but there is some fairly blatant usage of the Crock-Pot brand. Fortunately, it’s worth reading through as the app offers plenty of easy to follow recipes, even if the interface isn’t always the most attractive.
Over 250 recipes are included, covering a multitude of purposes, such as soups, chillis, curries, and even sandwiches. In each case, theme, difficulty rating and time taken figures are all offered for easy browsing. Photos are also included to tantalize the visual tastebuds, before opening up to an ingredients list and step by step instructions. This is where things turn a little too simple and basic looking, but they tell users all that they need to know about cooking the meal.
Increasingly common cookery features such as a timer, shopping list option, conversions and substitution sections are all covered here, as well as hands-free voice command functionality. It all works just how one would expect, easily covering everything users expect of a modern cookery app.
Crock-Pot Recipes does offer much more content than that, through in-app purchases, but this is where things could get pretty expensive. I found the ‘basic’ 250 recipes plentiful enough and didn’t feel any great need or urge to spend more. It’s convenient to have so many slow cooker focused recipes in one place.

CROCK-POT™ Recipes—OFFICIAL APP for the CROCK-POT® Slow CookerUniversal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Buy Now: $3.99Released: 2013-01-16 :: Category: Apps mentioned in this post: CROCK-POT™ Recipes—OFFICIAL APP for the CROCK-POT® Slow Cooker

[ Crock-Pot Recipes Review is a post from 148Apps ]

In this app players take on the roll of Momo, a flying squirrel who is determined to defeat the forces of evil after a band of wicked owls turned his village into ashes.
To go along with the sweet characters and the endearing plot line, Momonga Pinball Adventures features a unique muted art style and crisp, hand drawn graphics that look fantastic on all of Apple’s devices.

Like any pinball game, keeping the ball from hitting the gutter is of the utmost importance. This is styled like a traditional pinball machine – you will shoot Momo from the side of the screen by pulling back and releasing your finger, and from there, you will control the flippers that are located to the left and right of each area.
These are controlled by simple taps, and I found that the controls were responsive, quick to react, and easy to use. Each level is divided into several areas that you must navigate, gathering stars, breaking barriers, and hitting key spots to advance.

Levels are dynamic, and some of them even expand on traditional pinball gameplay to incorporate other gaming elements. For example, since Momo is a flying squirrel, the game takes advantage of the gliding mechanic. In some instances, Momo will glide through portions of the level, and at this point, you will use tilt motion controls to steer him towards his goal, grabbing stars as you go.
The tilt motion controls are equally easy to use, and these small breaks in the gameplay serve to keep Momonga from becoming repetitive. Every level also has a series of goals to complete, another aspect that adds a bit of a challenge to the game.
As with any pinball game, finishing all of the goals, attaining a high score, and hitting all of the targets can be a daunting task, and Momonga is no exception. You will encounter levels that are frustrating, Momo will fall between the flippers, and you will need to replay parts of the game. Momonga is not perfect by any means, though I did appreciate the variation in level design and the clever use of obstacles.

Momonga Pinball Adventures features nine unique levels in all, each with five challenges to complete, so there is quite a bit of gameplay to finish. The game also has leaderboards and Game Center achievements so you can compete with your friends. When you’ve finished the achievements and the main game, you can play the infinite bonus level as much as you like.
What I liked: I’m a sucker for adorable graphics, and this game features quite a few lovable characters, like Momo the flying squirrel (or Momonga, hence the name of the app!), Fry the firefly, Panda the panda, and Guaka the molerat. I was also pleased to see that there were no in-app purchases or addons of any type.
What I didn’t like: Momonga can be frustrating at times, but that is true of any pinball game. It’s never fun to bounce off of something unexpected and fall from the grasp of the flippers having to restart, but that’s how the game goes. I would have liked to see a bit more of a true pinball experience – the gameplay at times could be a little bit slow.
To buy or not to buy: This fun little casual game is well designed, challenging, and well worth the purchase, even if you’re not typically a pinball fan. Children will also have a great time playing Momonga Pinball Adventures.

App Name: Momonga Pinball Adventures
Version Reviewed: 1.0.1
Category: Games
Developer: Paladin Studios
Price: $0.99
Score:

» Related posts:
Take a Trip To The Most Romantic City in the World with Pinball City Paris HD – iPad Game Review
Send Bunnies Flying in Bunny Cannon HD – iPad Game Review
Monster Pinball Lets You Travel From Table To Table – iPad App Review

Ansel Adams (1902–1984) is one of the most famous and talented photographers of all time. His enthusiasm and passion for the craft showed in his work and he was loved by nearly all that saw his photographs. Designed to be an interactive companion to the book “Looking at Ansel Adams: The Photographs and the Man” by Andrea Stillman, the app is beautifully narrated and easily stands on its own as a source of entertainment and information both.
Certainly some of his most famous photographs are featured, including Moonrise, Hernandez, Clearing Winter Storm, and Moon and Half Dome but also details of the more personal side of the man with items like postcards written to colleagues such as Edward Weston, Alfred Stieglitz and Garry Trudeau.
A special feature from within the app is the Print Explorer. While viewing winter Sunrise you can first see the straight, un-cropped print and then also several variations created by the artist during different stages of his career. It is very interesting to see the variations that occur with subtle changes to the very same image.
Viewing the letters and postcard inside the app are perhaps the most intimate detail, letting you read his thoughts relayed in his own voice.

What I liked: This app is the next generation of coffee-table book. The images are beautiful and a delight to flip through.
What I didn’t like: An in-app purchase is required if you want to see the true wealth of information contained within the app, including additional photographs, narration, letters and postcards (fortunately, you can also order the book from within the app).
To buy or not to buy: If you enjoy the work of Ansel Adams, you won’t regret grabbing this app.

App Name: Looking At Ansel Adams: The Photographs and the Man
Version Reviewed: 1.0
Category: Photo & Video
Developer: MX
Price: Free
Score:

» Related posts:
Recall the Lost Art of Letter Writing with ‘Letter’ — iPad App Review
Celebrate 75 Years of LIFE – iPad App Review
Follow the Story of a Princess in Tangled: Storybook Deluxe – iPad App Review

I’ve been playing Paper Toss with Friends for iPad for the last week or so. It’s still a simple, fun game to play, but now it has added some cool bells and whistles – or actually staplers, footballs, soda cans, bouncy balls, watermelons, and even hand grenades. These are all new options to replace the crumpled up paper and try to toss into the garbage can.
(...)Read the rest of Quick Look & Video Demo: Paper Toss with Friends for iPad (97 words)

© patrickj for iPad Insight, 2012. |
Permalink |
Add to
del.icio.us

Post tags: iPad app reviews, iPad game reviews

What are Dolch Words? The Dolch Word List is a list of frequently used words compiled by Edward William Dolch, PhD. The list was prepared in 1936. The list was originally published in his book: Problems in Reading in 1948. Dolch compiled the list based on children’s books of his era. The list contains 220 "service words" that have to be easily recognized in order to achieve reading fluency in English. The compilation excludes nouns, which comprises of a separate 95-word list (also included in the app). Q. What are Sight Words? Many of the 220 Dolch words can’t be “sounded out” using common sound-to-letter implicit phonics patterns and have to be learned by sight; hence the alternative term, “sight word." Although the list is divided into grades, for native English speakers, all the words in the Dolch Word List should be mastered by the end of 1st grade. What's NewMinor tweaks & fixes.
Dolch Words

Train Crisis HD+ Review
By Rob Rich on March 30th, 2012
Our Rating: :: FIRST CLASS TICKETUniversal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad

Leading trains around a track is apparently quite the white-knuckle affair. Of course it still looks cool if they meet with an unfortunate accident.

Developer: U-Play Online
Price: $0.99
Version: 1.2.1
App Reviewed on: iPhone 3GS
Graphics / Sound Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
User Interface Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Gameplay Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Re-use / Replay Value Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
Overall Rating: 3.88 out of 5 stars

My initial impression of Train Crisis HD+ was that is was a decent, if simple, reactionary puzzle game. But that’s only how it starts. After a few levels are put to rest, things start to get a bit more complex. And once that new time period opens up it turns out to be kind of a little awesome.
The basics of Train Crisis HD+ are fairly, well, basic. By tapping on a given intersecting piece of train track, players can change the path a locomotive will take. The key goal of almost every level is to get each train to its matching station (i.e. red to red, blue to blue, etc). As expected things get tough fast and it won’t be long before these lumbering behemoths are dancing circles around each other with mere virtual centimeters separating them from each other. And that’s still only covering the basics.
It’s these added complexities, in addition to the promise of at least two more groups of levels yet to come, that make Train Crisis HD+ something special. Signals can be used to hold up a specific train for up to five crucial seconds. Tracks will wind through hidden tunnels, requiring some luck (or a little trial-and-error) to plan a safe route. Some tracks will be blocked by rubble and require dynamite to clear, but a limited amount of TNT means that players will have to really scrutinize the layout in order to find the best way through. And still there’s more. Ghost trains that never stop moving, banks that supply cash needed to complete specific levels, and so on. There’s always something new or an insane mix of the recently-learned and familiar to keep things feeling fresh.
It’s unfortunate that there’s very little reason to return to previously completed stages, though. Sure there are three stars to earn for each, and they can be gathered in order to unlock even more levels, but the ranking system makes little to no sense. Losing a single train means failure, but in most cases any form of success means three stars. Then again, I thought I did quite well on a few levels but ended up with two (or even one!) stars for now discernible reason. A little guidance would go a long way, I think.
Even though I worry about Train Crisis HD+‘s longevity, what’s already there is certainly worth it. I can’t get over just how much more interesting everything became once a few of those new elements were introduced. And to think, there’s potentially at least twice as much game looming on the horizon!

Train Crisis HD+Universal App - Designed for iPhone and iPad
Buy Now: $0.99Our Rating: :: FIRST CLASS TICKETRead Our Full Review >>Released: 2012-03-23 :: Category: GamesApps mentioned in this post: Train Crisis HD+

About: Train Crisis HD+ Review is a post from 148Apps

Instamatch – iPad app review

 Instamatch – iPad app review

I’m not going to lie: the first thought that popped into my head when I started to peruse the Instamatch app was “what a waste of time.’
Then I spent an hour happily playing with it. Waste of time, indeed. Instamatch is memory concentration game that integrates with the Instagram, the popular iPhone app, to create a card-matching memory game.
It works like this: Pick a game mode that either chooses from a pre-selected set of photos or from your own Instagram photos. (The game is not officially associated with the photo-sharing app, by the way). The goal is to match as many pairs of photos as possible–as quickly as possible.
If you’re choosing from the game’s Instagram library that typically means picking pairs of similar photos. For example, if you play a game that filters your photo choices into the “nature” category, you’ll likely be shown one photo of a waterfall and then have to match it with a similar photo depicting a different waterfall. Or, if you decide to play the game using your own photos, you’ll be tasked to match pairs of the same photo.

There are five pre-selected themes–the aforementioned Nature as well as World Wonders, Cities and of the course, what seem to be the two most favorite photo categories on the entire Internet: Animals and Food. You can play by yourself or play with up to four other users (the app is also available for the iPhone, which supports a two-player game). You can also customize your own picture set by typing in a subject (cats, coffee, cars, etc) and the game brings up pictures that sport a hashtag that matches your theme (this can be a little confusing–I typed in “shoes” and in addition to images of sandals, sneakers and boots, got pictures of a ring and someone lying on a sidewalk. But that’s the conundrum of the hashtag–not an actual fault with the game). And, if you’re logged into your own Instagram account, it’ll pull hashtagged pics from your friend’s collections as well.
The game is playable in three levels – “easy,” “normal” and “hard”–and it’s the last category where things get really interesting. The goal at this level is to match up 15 different pairs of moving cards. That’s right–just as soon as you think you’ve memorized exactly where that pie picture is–oops, it’s switched places with the cake.

What I liked: This game isn’t just super-addicting, it’s also a good way to boost memory and concentration skills. Plus, if you have an Instagram account, it’s fun to see which of your friends’ pictures pop up. The “hard” level is especially fun–all those moving cards, make for a fast and furious matching game.
What I didn’t like: The instructions aren’t very clear. It took me a while to figure out some of the steps–and that was with my husband looking over my shoulder, trying to help. Also, there’s a bit of a lag time when you try to pick a card–this can cut down on your time/score quite a bit.
To buy or not to buy: Instamatch offers a fairly cheap and fun way to work on memory and concentration skills. Plus, I found that playing the game at the harder levels was actually a bit of a stress reliever. It’s cheaper than therapy and not as physically exhausting as actual exercise–a total win in my book.

App Name: Instamatch
Version Reviewed: 1.2
Category: Photo & Video
Developer: Tiny Hearts
Price: $.99
Score:

» Related posts:
My Photo Books – iPad app review
FX Photo Studio HD Inspires the Photo Artist Within You
Falling Fred – iPad Game Review
