Although I don’t spec out colors day to day as I used to earlier in my career, there are times that I get stuck trying to figure out what colors to use for a design I’m doing. I’m VERY color challenged when it comes to doing design work. Even when I have the main color I want, I’m not good at picking out the complimentary colors. My friend Sydney showed me the myPantone App and I had to download it that night. It does the obvious. You can browse through the swatches and lookup colors by numbers. That’s no different than having a Pantone swatch book in front of you. What made me download the App as soon as I could was the integrated camera feature. Using the camera on your iOS device you can snap a photo and then use your finger to sample the colors in the photo and the app will find the closest Pantone color to the color sample that you chose. That’s really cool, but to make it even better the App gives you not only the matching Pantone color, but you can also get the Lab, sRGB, HTML (Hex), and CMYK values. This is awesome for web design too. For example, you could walk into a business and snap a couple of photos of their existing decor. Then you’ll have the swatches needed for designing their marketing materials as well as their website. Palettes can be shared via emailed or printed as well as sent to another device in range. Colors can also be saved as Favorites. There’s even a new SkinTones Library.
One thing you have to realize is that your iPhone is NOT color calibrated and lighting conditions for the photo will also make a difference especially if the white balance is off. Since your camera is NOT perfect, this will always be just an estimate and not an exact science. It ill help get you in the ballpark faster than manually searching. However, even with those caveats I would say that this is a must have App for designers. What I would like to see is Universal version that is native to iPad.

The five games provided were fun enough to entertain my 6 year old, but my 8 year old found them a little boring. To be fair, she is not the intended audience here, which is ages 3-6 if you ask me.  I like that the games have their own section as well, so that if a young user just wants to get to one of the little games it’s simple.
The music and narration of Zoe’s Green Planet are great, and the app has the ability to turn on or off the text of the story, the narration, and the ambient sounds.
The only thing I might criticize Zoe’s Green Planet for is being a little short. But, then again, perhaps 16 pages of interactive fun for $3 is about all a kid can handle.

These are generally meetings with kisses and hugs. However, there are times when we may need to pickup someone that we hadn’t met yet. Perhaps it’s a colleague or maybe a new roommate. We all have seen those signs as we leave the baggage claim being held by various courier services. However, in recent months I’ve noticed that more and more companies are using tablets to display these signs electronically. It’s certainly more professional looking than a magic marker and of course you can brand it.

I actually started doing this when meeting friends just for the fun of it/laughs. Of course you can create these with any number of applications on your desktop and then send it to your iPad or iPhone as a PDF. While that works, it’s not convenient to create one on the fly. I could also build them in Photoshop Touch using photos and text right on my iOS device. That got me wondering if there was an App on the App Store that would let you do it directly. I found one. At first glance I really wasn’t impressed. The screenshots on the App Store were really “basic” looking. Sort of like 90′s clipart. Since it was free I downloaded it and gave it a shot. I was happy to see that I could put my own logo in and that the clipart look that I saw on the screen shots was just a bad looking logo. You can put in up to two lines of text. The App is an Universal App and therefore works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. It also works in both portrait and landscape. You can choose from 4 different skins to change the background color and that’s pretty much it.
It works, but could be better!
While the Pick-Up Sign App does exactly what it says the first thing that I didn’t like was the ads being displayed on the sign. You can do an in-app purchase of 0.99¢ to turn the ads off. That’s the 1st thing I did. While I could easily import my logo as a .PNG file, the app didn’t seem to recognize the transparency. I ended up making a white version on a black background in Photoshop Touch. That’s when I realized that the black background in the dark skin wasn’t 100% black. I could go back and match it in Photoshop, but it would be nice to be able to choose a custom color background or better yet let me import a photo from my Photos/Camera Roll. The other issue is that you don’t get to choose fonts or font size. There is only one font and it scales based on the display orientation. I’d love it if it had a few font choices. It will be nice to have this App for those times when I need a quick sign, but if I really want it to look nice I’ll probably continue to build them in Photoshop Touch and display them as photos.

One of the best things about the Ansel & Clair apps is that they bring learning to kids without them really knowing it’s learning. They feel like it’s a game. It’s fun. My kids have loved these apps. Each and every one has been a hit. The developers incorporate so much information into the apps, they go above and beyond. Providing great puzzles like the Fern Life-cycle or the Build Your Own Dino Mini Game. They ask questions like…
−Why were there no date fruit in the Triassic or any fruit trees or flowers?

Not just because it’s a well put together children’s storybook, but because it has almost all the essential pieces that they’ve come to expect, plus a fun story as well. It’s more than just a storybook though, it’s an interactive story, with music and games for kids to enjoy even after they’ve gone through the story time and again. There are 8 original songs and 4 different games for the children to play.

The story is about a boy who loves looking out his sky-light at the Moon. He finds one night that he can’t see it, it’s missing…and attempts to track down who took it. His adventure leads him outside to talk with various nocturnal animals, learning about what they do, all the while trying to find the “Moon thief”.
The app is full of very vivid illustrations and nice animations as well as the games and songs I mentioned earlier. It has 15 different languages to choose from, and is narrated (if you so choose) very well. The story itself is fun and cute, and my kids really loved it. Funnily enough my oldest daughter used to have a fascination with the Moon when she was very young, once asking if she could borrow her grandfather’s ladder to climb up to it…she was 2. The idea that the Moon is missing is a neat take on a children’s story, and the story isn’t overly complicated, but does a great job of explaining how the Moon can be hidden at times, what happens outside the house at night, and keeps kids engaged while doing so.
My only issue with the app was that it is a portrait only application. I’m not sure why this bothers me, but my first instinct when using storybook apps with the kids is to turn it landscape, and this wasn’t an option here. I hate to knock an app for something like this, as I’m sure it’s a design choice based on content, but when I sit down with a kid on each side, landscape orientation just works better.
Other than that, I can say the app was a hit at our house, kids aged 5 & 7, and has become a go-to bedtime story already.

Unfortunately although you have a choice in hotels, you don’t really have a choice in hotel entertainment systems. However, if you do happen to stay in a property that has LodgeNet and you have an iOS device (this is a Universal app) with internet access you can use it to control your TV, get information about the hotel you’re staying in and if the service allows you can even check out the room service and other services. Of course you can also order video on demand right from your iOS device.

I’m traveling on business this week and I got to my room last night. I had downloaded the LodgeNet App a while ago, but this was the 1st time that I was in a property that supports it. I may have been in one before, but I don’t always turn on the hotel TV when I travel. During my channel surfing I saw the ad for the App and remembered that I already had it. So I decided to give it a try. You pair the App with your current room’s TV by displaying the code (I imagine it changes with each new guest) on the TV from the entertainment menu. Key that code into the App on your device and you’re all set. From that point on you can use the touch screen on your iDevice to change channels, control the volume and order video on demand content. It’s simple and it works, but it could be so much more. As a TV remote it’s cool, but not a killer App. However, if it tied into things like ordering room service, making reserations at hotel restaurants, etc., ordering car services/taxis, summoning the bellhop, unlocking the door when you return to the room, wakeup calls, digital do-not-disturb signs, etc. then the App would be infinitely more usable. As it stands the App works as advertised, but it would be nice to see it go way beyond TV control.

However, rather than send two separate photos I want to combine them into one. Photo Combine allows you to easily combine two or four photos into a new one. I can’t believe how much I’m using this App. Just yesterday I wanted two Tweet two photos from Photoshop World, but I wanted to tweet just one photo. Photo Combine makes this task so easy. Just launch the App and choose the layout for your two or four photos. Tap the plus signs to add the photos into the layout in the order you want. Then tap the Combine button to create a new combined photo and add it to the Camera Roll. You can also share the new photo via Facebook, Twitter or Tumblr directly from the App as well as email directly from the App.
Photo Combine works exactly as advertised and like I said, I’m using it more often that I ever thought I would.
