Twitter is all about short messages of 140 characters or less. Sure you can now easily tweet a picture along with your text, but then you’ll have less than 140 characters because the link to your pic is going to take up some of the text. GraphicTweets aims to combine your tweet with the picture you want to send. This isn’t the first app we’ve seen that allows you to add text to a picture and share it, but most of the other Apps are aimed at Facebook and Instagram. This is one of the few Apps aimed at Twitter first and of course it allows you to share via Facebook and Instagram too. Once you launch the App it starts you off with the ability to key in your text. You can choose font color and background color as well as size. Next you can add a photo. It can be one of your photos or one from Flickr or Facebook. Lastly, just hit the Share button and choose to share your GraphicTweet on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. I’m impressed by the large variety of font choices. It actually has more fonts than any other mobile App that I’ve seen. You can use multi-touch gestures to rotate the text or move it to where it looks best on the photo. It works as advertised, however, I’d like to see a couple of additions. First off I’d like to see this as a Universal App supporting iPad. Next, I’d like to see the ability to have word wrap in the text. Right now it seems to be limited to one line of text per GraphicTweet.

Some of those lucky enough to have already received their Pebble smartwatch may have experienced some serious issues when trying to update the wrist-worn device to firmware version 1.9 at the end of last week.

Pebble describes the issue as follows:
“[...] on rare occasions, Pebble’s MCU was not correctly reconfigured prior to entering shutdown. When this occurred it prevented button presses from waking up the Pebble.”

@pebble A shame mine is already dead :/I haven’t added Shutdown RMA in my original support request, what should I do ?
— Mark Bløndal (@MarkBloendal) March 27, 2013

@pebble My Pebble is dead.
Top Model Release App

 Top Model Release App

As a photographer I’m constantly having models sign model releases. Having a signed model release has saved me on more than one occasion when it came time to have my work published in various magazines and ads. With that said, I gave up on paper based releases years ago. Since that time I’ve always done model releases electronically on my iPhone or now my iPad. I’ve reviewed a few different model release Apps here and yesterday I was introduced to a new one. I decided to give it a shot. Top Model Release has a nice clean, straight forward interface. After launching the App you immediately walk through the process of setting up the photographer profile. This involves entering your information such as your name, address, etc. Luckily if you have a contact already setup in the Contacts app you can just choose your card to save time. You can also insert a logo and insert your signature. Next you’re ready to create your first release. You can choose either Adult, Minor or Property Release. The App comes preconfigured with very decent sample releases already built-in. Of course you can customize these to your own specific needs or completely replace them with the wording you use on your actual releases. I did a sample Adult release and the process was really straight forward. You can either manually enter the model info in or choose a Contact. Then you put in the date and location information about your shoot. It would be nice to see a “get current location” option. There’s also a spot to enter Agency information, which I haven’t seen in the other Apps.

Next up you can choose a photo to put on the release or snap one on the spot. Lastly the model can digitally sign right on your device with a finger or stylus. As you would expect the App then generates a nicely formated PDF that you can email directly to your model and yourself by default or print it. Now all of the above isn’t really new and I’ve seen most of this in the other Apps I’ve tried. I will give Top Release kudos for having a few extra bells and whistles. The first one is that you can duplicate an existing release to speed up the process for the next one you create. For example, if you work with the same model often you can duplicate the Model info. If you’re shooting a different model, you can duplicate the shoot info or you can simply duplicate the full release. It’s not apparent at first, but you can create additional “custom” releases to choose from besides the default adult, property and minor releases. This makes it easy to have different releases for the kinds of work you do, perhaps a release for paid work and a slightly different one for trades. The one thing I was immediately surprised by was that it has iCloud syncing that just works in the background. I didn’t have to turn it on, nor did it ask me. I did a test on the iPhone and by the time I got to the iPad to do a test the one from the iPhone was listed there! Overall, I can’t really find anything wrong with this App. It does everything I would need and it does it in a nice way. The one thing that I’m a stickler for is the final presentation of the actual release/PDF and Top Model Release produces a great looking release. As a matter of fact it bears a striking resemblance to Easy Release, however I especially like how it sized my logo larger than some of the other Apps I’ve used. While the App has everything I need in it, I will point out that it does lack a couple of things that others may need. The releases are limited to one page. If you have a lengthy contact this App may not work for you. Also there is no way to customize it with additional fields.
If you’re looking for a great model release App, Top Model Release is a solid choice. It’s clear that the developer has listened to my feedback on other apps in this category and didn’t make the same mistakes!

Having announced that it will begin selling the iPhone to customers beginning April 12, one other interesting tidbit to come out of T-Mobile’s “Uncarrier” event, yesterday, is the fact that the – slightly tweaked – model of Apple’s smartphone the network has struck a deal to sell, will, in fact, arrive with full support for AWS.

Officially referred to as UMTS band IV, AWS is a wireless telecommunications spectrum band which requires physical hardware to operate, and is designed specifically for voice and data services, alongside both video and messaging.
Getting a bit more technical for a moment, AWS-1 is primarily used in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Chile, and when it was first introduced replaced the bands which operated on the spectrum from 2150 to 2162 MHz.
As such, the model of iPhone T-Mobile will begin selling to its customers next month will carry the new model number “A1428.”
The handset will also come “unlocked” out of the box.
The A1428 edition of the iPhone 5 that Apple will start hawking on April 12th (in lockstep with T-Mobile’s launch date) will arrive unlocked out of the box. By default, Apple will sell these at full MSRP in a “SIM-in unlocked fashion,” as confirmed to us by an Apple representative here at T-Mobile’s event in New York City. Of course, those wishing to pay T-Mob’s advertised $99.99 up front price will also be able to do so right at an Apple store, but eager jetsetters that are simply looking for a frictionless way to purchase an unlocked iPhone 5 that works on both AT&T and T-Mobile’s LTE bands have but a few weeks to wait.

Preorders begin on April 5.
Amazon Instant Video

 Amazon Instant Video

Having another streaming content option is usually a good thing. I’ve got Netflix, Slingplayer, HBO Go and various TV station Apps. There is no shortage of things to watch on the go. When I saw the announcement for the Amazon Instant Video App I downloaded it immediately. I figured that since I already pay for Amazon Prime, I might as well take advantage of this benefit. I just got a chance to play with the App and it does the kinds of things I expected right off the bat. I signed in with my Amazon credentials and I was presented with a display of available TV shows and movies for instant streaming. So far so good. I randomly picked an episode of Fringe to watch and the quality was decent. Again, this is all good, but…

Trouble in paradise…

While the App performed as I expected, I was completely dismayed to find out that it only worked via WiFi. That’s right, no 3G/4G cellular support. While you can watch any videos that you’ve downloaded, you can’t stream anything once you step outside the range of a WiFi Network. This seems like a huge step backwards in 2013. In the early days many apps were restricted from streaming over 3G because AT&T was the only network that supported the iPhone and AT&T/Apple feared that millions of streaming customers would bring the network to its knees. However, those days have long gone since the iPhone is available now on several carriers. Also since most carriers charge for a certain amount of data use each month, users are careful not to do a ton of streaming unless their plans support it. I think that it’s very shortsighted of Amazon to limit their App this way. Perhaps put up a warning when I user starts a stream over cellular data and then once the user taps OK they’re on their own. The other problem (and this is not just an Amazon problem) is that the App doesn’t support AirPlay. So If I understand this correctly, I have to be on my WiFi network to enjoy the App, and since I’m home on my network I can’t even enjoy the show on my big screen HDTV? With these limitations, this will not be my goto App.
If you have an Amazon Prime account or you’ve purchased downloadable movies via Amazon, then the App is probably worth having on your device. However, the WiFi requirement and lack of AirPlay/HDMI out support will make it a limited experience.

Over the weekend, a report surfaced via The Wall Street Journal that cited Apple had – (according to people familiar with the situation) – begun cutting back its orders of components and parts needed to produce its iPhone 5, due to ‘weaker-than-expected’ demand.
This has, in turn, caused a ripple effect in the market, seeing some investors begin dropping AAPL stock, which ultimately led to the (very real) 3.5-percent drop we saw in the stock’s share price on Monday.

One analyst with market watcher Sterne Agee, however, doesn’t believe the hype. In a note sent out to the firm’s investors earlier today, the analyst highlighted that the company’s own research into such matters suggests that suppliers are still showing “robust” demand for Apple’s iPhone 5, adding that the firm believes the recent reports of component orders allegedly being curbed by the California-based company were not so much to do with consumer demand for the product, but rather the fact that the yields on the component parts we’re talking about have significantly improved.
Steven Sande for TUAW has the fine-grain details:
Wu and several other Wall Street analysts believe that the rumored component order cuts have nothing to do with customer demand. Their take is that yields on the components have improved as suppliers gain experience, and Apple needs to place fewer orders to end up with the parts required to build the iPhones.
In addition, the analyst noted that the recent shifting of production between Apple’s Far Eastern suppliers may have been the main contributor to the appearance that Apple was cutting component orders for its latest iPhone.
Case solved?

Back in July, a UK Judge had ruled that Samsung’s Galaxy tab did not infringe on Apple’s iPad as “it’s not as cool” as Apple’s product.
While the judge took a dig at Samsung, the ruling was more adverse for Apple as the judge had ordered Apple to publicly acknowledge that Samsung didn’t copy the iPad on its website.
