Let the Great iPad Selloff Begin
Are you planning on selling your current first or second generation iPad to fund the purchase of an iPad 3? Well, you’re not alone. According to eBay, more people have been trading in their first and second generations this month than in any other month of the year.
In fact, 10 times as many people traded in their iPads this year compared to the same month last year, for a total of 125,000 total tablet trade-in offers, and 97.6 percent of those were Apple iPads.
The sales took place on eBay’s Instant Sale site, which is different than its typical auction service in that it gives gadget owners the ability to trade in their items for a cash payment. Like on similar sites, Nextworth and Gazelle, users describe their items to eBay, then ship the item to the company for free, where they’re given the payment as long as the item matches up to the description.
It’s no surprise that so many people are trading in their iPads in anticipation of a new tablet, after all, Apple did sell over 32 million of the devices last year. It’s a bit alarming, though, since Apple has faced serious supply issues with every iPad launch. It stands to reason that Apple will once again be surprised by the demand for the iPad 3.
This little glimpse into iPad 2 trade-in numbers is great for those of us planning to snatch up an iPad 3 on release day – those lines are going to be longer and they’re going to start earlier, so be prepared.
