Perfect Your Photos with Adobe’s Photoshop Touch
428 days ago
Photoshop Touch is a version of Adobe’s popular desktop image manipulation software, Photoshop, that has been redesigned for use on the iPad. While it doesn’t have quite as many features as the desktop version of Photoshop, Photoshop touch is easier to use, which makes it accessible to users of all skill levels, and it has all of the tools that you need for basic photo editing on the go.
This app is unique because it has some functionality that no other photo editing app in the App Store can quite compete with, plus a great touch interface that’s even easier to use than a mouse and keyboard.
If you’ve used Photoshop before, you will likely feel right at home with this app. I’m a regular Photoshop user, and I was able to dive right in to the photo editing tools. If you’re new to Photoshop, the app will seem daunting at first, but a few hours of fiddling around with it and experimenting with the included tutorials will teach you all that you need to know to make fantastic images.
The desktop version of Photoshop is quite a bit more difficult to pick up, so this is a great way to get your feet wet if you’ve been wanting to try the software. Photoshop has an extensive and powerful set of tools that can sometimes be confusing, but with Photoshop Touch, Adobe has narrowed it down to the essentials.
When you open the app, you can choose to view one of the available tutorials (there are several) or open a new project. You can import photos from your iPad, take a photo with the camera, import from Facebook, import from Adobe Creative Cloud (a service with a subscription fee) or grab images from Google, which is a really cool feature. The Google Images import is especially handy when you’re looking to doctor up a photo – say adding a cowboy hat to a friend’s picture – and you need an image. I was surprised to find that there was no way to import photos from Adobe’s other cloud service, Revel, or from Dropbox.
From there you can choose what you want to do to an image. There are a lot of options in Photoshop Touch, which puts it ahead of a lot of other photo editing apps in the App Store.
Want to whip up a birthday card, with a custom image plus a birthday cake and a present? It’s easy using your own photos, images imported from Google, and Adobe’s selection and layering tools. Add text with the text tools and resize with the crop and size adjustment tools.
Need to add effects or simply clean up a photo that was underexposed? You can make a range of adjustments, including replacing colors, changing contrast and color balance, altering levels and curves, reducing noise, adjusting saturation, or just use the autofix tool to quickly improve upon any of your photos. There are also several special effects to add, allowing you to make old, vintage photos or stylized, artistic ones.
Have a photograph of a gorgeous landscape that a passerby ruined? Use the select and clone tools to clean it right up, painting that interloper right out of your scene.
Want to create up your own artwork? That’s also possible, using the paintbrush, eraser, blurring tools. Or turn your existing photos into paintings or sketches with the art tools.
Essentially, if you can dream it up, this app can most likely do it. It shares many of the same selection and masking tools that Photoshop has – from lasso and magic wand to the all new scribble selection tool, which allows you to erase images simply by drawing on them, and adding new images takes just a few taps, for intricate, layered creations that will impress both your friends and your family.
Photoshop Touch can do nearly everything that other photo editing apps in the App Store can do. Adding dramatic flare is as simple as utilizing masking tools to isolate an image and then layering effects on top. Creating a Photo Splash type of photo (one colored element on a black and white base is equally easy. You can also quickly swap colors in images, add new elements, create sketches, add frames, add text, turn photos into paintings, add retro-style effects, and create amazing image blends, all within this app.
Adobe Photoshop Touch gives you all the tools you need to make adjustments to your iPad photos, and really, you’re only limited to what you can do with this app by your own imagination. Did you get a new iPad this week? Photoshop Touch is the perfect companion for the iPad’s robust new camera and high resolution display.
What I liked: There are an assortment of detailed tutorials in the app that teach users how to use all of the available tools. With these tutorials, you can learn to add effects, replace colors, create layered photos, clean up backgrounds, blend images, and more.
What I didn’t like: 1600×1600 resolution is the maximum size that this app can save in, and almost all cameras over 3 megapixels produce images bigger than that. This small image size limits what can be done with the work that you produce within the app – it can’t be printed, and it’s too small to work with in the desktop version of Photoshop. I would have liked more options for importing photos, such as Flickr and Dropbox integration. I also had some significant trouble with the scribble tool and the lag that it caused on detailed projects, even with the newest iPad.
To buy or not to buy: This app is definitely not without its flaws. It doesn’t save large files, and it crashes every once in awhile, but the range of unique tools, detailed adjustments, and creative effects makes Photoshop Touch a must have in every photo editing arsenal. Those of you who use professional editing software like Lightroom, Aperture, or Photoshop might be disappointed with the limitations of this app, but for casual photo editing, it’s the perfect solution.
